Fractional laser skin resurfacing is used to treat a number of skin conditions with minimal downtime. It can treat a number of dermatologic and cosmetic skin conditions that include sun damage (wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet), acne scars, surgical and traumatic scars, overall skin texture and tone issues, melasma (pregnancy mask), stretch marks (striae) or skin irregularities.

One of the best fractional lasers on the market is the 1540, a non-ablative laser. This laser delivers high energy light through the skin using an array of high precision microbeams or columns. Water and other substances in the skin called chromophores absorb the light that goes deep into the dermis where it destroys or vaporizes very thin sections of the skin, not visible to the naked eye. This process creates narrow, deep columns of skin coagulation, which is surrounded by healthy, untreated skin. As a result, the skin repairs itself quickly by replacing old and sun damaged skin with new and healthier skin. Think of the analogy of lawn aeration and how it penetrates only very small thin sections of the lawn, leaving the lawn virtually intact, meanwhile, the lawn grows in healthier. Since the Fractional 1540 laser delivers fractionated light to thin sections of the skin, the treatments are safe, heal much faster and produce consistent results in comparison to their non-fractionated laser (Ablative lasers), which have the potential for greater side effects and complications.

1540 is much less invasive compared to ablative laser procedures, resulting in a faster recovery time. Most people experience minimal downtime, with some mild redness and swelling for a day or two post recovery and some temporary dryness for up to two weeks. Since these treatments are less invasive, improvements may be noticed after one treatment; however, three to five sessions may be recommended every three to four weeks for best results. New healthier tissue will continue to form for 6 to 12 months after, and a sunscreen with at least a 30+ SPF is recommended as new skin is more susceptible to sun exposure.
